Friday’s NBA Best Bets
(Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook)
Phoenix Suns (-9.5) at Charlotte Hornets | O/U 217.5 (-110/-110)
The Suns will have to rebound quickly after suffering a 15-point loss to the Celtics on Thursday. They’ve been a little inconsistent over the last few weeks, going 5-5 over their last ten, but this has been a tough stretch, and they did miss Devin Booker for a couple of games. Booker in the lineup is the key to this offense as the ball runs through him. He has a 29.7 assists percentage, and the team has an efficiency difference of +8.9% when he’s on the court.
After facing the best team in the league, the Suns will see the worst. Charlotte has lost seven of its last nine, and both wins are against below-.500 teams. They are last in averaged point differential, 29th in adjusted offensive ranking, and 27th in adjusted defensive ranking. One thing that has looked better is their defense, as they are fourth in defensive rating over its last six, but all of those opponents are in the bottom ten in adjusted offensive rankings; Phoenix is tenth.
It doesn’t matter if Phoenix is on a back-to-back, this team can clear the spread.
Pick: Suns -9.5 (-112)
Los Angeles Clippers at New Orleans Pelicans (-6.5)| O/U 218 (-110/-110)
The Clippers are struggling at the wrong time. It wasn’t too long ago that this team was in the top spot of the Western Conference, but they are 8-7 in their last 15. During that span, the highly efficient defense is 26th in defensive rating, and the offensive rating is in the middle of the road. You have to be worried that there are a lot of older veterans who have had trouble staying on the court. Could they be breaking down?
The Pelicans are picking up at the right time, as they are 13-5 over their last 18. Their overall recent offense has been tough to contain, as their effective field goal percentage is 60% or better in six of their last ten. Zion is showing off the potential we’ve expected when he’s healthy; he’s averaging 23.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game over his 16.
Playing the night before, don’t be surprised if the Clippers aren’t up for this game. Kawhi Leonard and Paul George clocked 30+ minutes against the Bulls and will likely be without James Harden.
Pick: Pelicans -6.5 (-110)
Orlando Magic (-7) at Toronto Raptors| O/U 217.5 (-110/-110)
The Magic look like a team that could be fun to watch come playoff time. They are 9-3 over their last 12, and defense continues to be that driving force as they’re fifth in defensive rating at that time. The level of competition has been subpar, but that’s the type of team they are facing tonight.
The Raptors were big sellers this year, and the level of play has shown that. They are 4-10 in their last 14, which includes losses to Detroit and Portland. They also have not been a confident team to back, as they are 1-7 against the spread, with the only cover being against Charlotte.
The Magic have locked down offenses all season, and they can attack a Raptors team in freefall.
Pick: Magic -7 (-110)
