The Boston Celtics won the first game of the 2024 NBA Finals by beating the Dallas Mavericks 107-89. One of the most important stories before the match was that of Kyrie Irving on his return to TD Garden with the Larry O’Brien Trophy as his goal. However, the guard of the Western champions suffered a new setback against what was his team for two seasons.
Irving has not been able to beat the Boston Celtics since 2021, and with today’s adverse result, he has accumulated 11 consecutive defeats. During this year’s regular season, the Mavericks lost both games against Boston with Kyrie on the court, in which he averaged 21 points, five rebounds, and 2.5 assists. The first game was on January 22, and the Celtics won by nine points. The second matchup was a 28-point loss at TD Garden.
The Duke graduate was traded from Brooklyn to Dallas in the middle of the 2022-23 campaign, but he played three games against Boston while still a member of the Nets and lost them all. The guard recorded 20.7 points, 5.0 assists, and 4.7 rebounds in those matches.
For the 2022 playoffs, the Celtics swept the Nets in the first round. ‘Ky’ did not have the best of performances as he only recorded 21.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists but suffered, recording only 2.3 turnovers. Of the four regular season matchups, Irving only played one of the four games against the division rivals, and the result was a loss by just six points.
